Iroquouis homeobox (IRX) factors are a family of homeodomain transcription factors that contribute to many different cells in the body inlcuding brain, other organs and fat cells. Specifically, IRX3 (part of the Irxb subgroup) controls a group of neurons in the brain that activates brown fat to increase energy expenditure, playing an essential role in obesity.
