This p-hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA) is 100% bio-based and designed to meet the requirements of the federal “BioPreferred” designation.
To prepare the pHBA, an engineered microbe was used to convert glucose into shikimic acid. All seven carbons of the shikimic acid are derived from glucose. Following purification from the cellular broth, the shikimic acid was catalytically converted into p-hydroxybenzoic acid. All seven carbons in the product are derived from shikimic acid.
