Highlights:
Aminolevulinic acid synthase or ALAS is an enzyme that catalzyes the synthesis of D-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) the first common precursor in the biosynthesis of all tetrapyrroles such as hemes, cobalamins and chlorophylls. There are two types of ALAS, 1 and 2. Type 2 is expressed in red blood cells where as Type 1 is ubiquitously expressed throughout the body. Mutations in ALAS2 have been linked to X-linked sideroblastic anemia where red blood cells appear in the bone marrow.
