Research in the Velleman lab has focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating muscle growth in chickens and turkeys with an emphasis on extracellular matrix gene expression. Studies have included: 1) the regulation of muscle growth and structure by the differential expression of extracellular matrix genes; 2) defining the cellular mechanisms by which extracellular matrix genes involved in growth factor signaling affect the growth of skeletal muscle; 3) the involvement of the extracellular matrix in meat tenderness; 4) the effects of thermal stress and nutritional regime on muscle growth mechanisms mediated by avian adult myoblasts; and 5) the association of breast muscle myopathies with muscle growth mechanisms.
