This Shikimic acid is 100% bio-based and designed to meet the requirements of the federal “BioPreferred” designation.
Shikimic acid was prepared from glucose using an engineered microbe. Purification from the fermentation broth afforded highly pure shikimic acid. All seven carbons are derived from glucose. Shikimic acid is a valuable chiral synthon and is used as the starting material for synthesis oseltamivir (Tamiflu). It is an intermediate in the shikimate pathway, which is necessary for synthesis of aromatic amino acids in plants and microorganisms.
