Quinic acid was prepared from glucose using an engineered microbe. Purification from fermentation broth afforded highly pure quinic acid. Quinic acid is a metabolite related to the shikimate pathway in plants and microorganisms. It is a valuable chiral synthon. Quinic acid has been isolated previously from cinchona bark.
