Macrophage cell line isolated from bone marrow in BALBC mice after immortalization with a retrovirus (J2) containing the myc and v-raf oncogenes.
BALB/c is an albino, laboratory-bred strain of the house mouse from which a number of common substrains are derived. BALB/c mice are useful for research into both cancer and immunology.

The line is not producing any murine Type C retroviruses as it was derived with a replication defective packaging cell line.
