A protein kinase R (PKR) KO macrophage cell line isolated from bone marrow in C57BL/6 mice after immortalization with a retrovirus (J2) containing the myc and v-raf oncogenes.
Protein kinase-R is activated by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), introduced to the cells by a viral infection. PKR contains an N-terminal dsRNA binding domain (dsRBD) and a C-terminal kinase domain, that gives it pro-apoptotic (cell-killing) functions. C57BL/6 also known as C57 black 6, C57 or black 6, is a common inbred strain of laboratory mouse. They are the most widely used and best-selling mouse strain, due to the availability of congenic strains, easy breeding, and robustness. 129 mice are widely used in the production of targeted mutations due to the availability of multiple embryonic stem cell lines derived from them. They also have a high incidence of spontaneous testicular teratomas.
