CD18, also known as integrin beta-2, is a member of the leukocyte integrin family of heterodimeric adhesion molecules. Integrins are cell surface proteins composed of an alpha subunit and a beta subunit that participate in cell adhesion and cell surface mediated signalling. CD18 combines with alpha subunits, CD11a, CD11b, and CD11c, to form LFA-1, Mac-1 and gp150/95. CD18 is believed to play an immportant role in the immune response and defects in this gene cause leukocyte adhesion deficiency.
