Multispectral Cell Imaging and Analysis Service

The Cell Imaging and Analysis Service uses flow cytometry techniques to identify and quantitate cell types in forensic samples.

Highlights:

  • High-throughput and non-destructive analysis of individual cells within biological samples
  • Quantify abundance of four cell types: epidermal (i.e., corneocytes shed through touch/contact), saliva/buccal, vaginal, and blood
  • Cells can be quantified in samples that have been aged/dried for >2 months
  • After imaging, cells can be used for other analyses (e.g., genetic profiling)

Individual cells are imaged with flow cytometry over a range of fluorescent wavelengths. Machine learning algorithms developed from a predictive framework database then analyze each cell image. Cell type is determined based on the attributes associated for the individual cell and how they relate to vaginal, saliva, blood or epidermal cells in the database. Any existing laboratories can easily adopt this technique using standard equipment.
