Dr. Pantopoulos lab is investigating mechanisms for regulation of cellular and systemic iron homeostasis. He is focusing on iron regulatory proteins, IRP1 and IRP2, which post-transcriptionally control the expression of several mRNAs involved in cellular iron metabolism. In addition, he is studying regulation of systemic iron traffic via hepcidin, the iron regulatory hormone.
